ANSONIA TALL CASE CLOCK

Oak case with ornate Renaissance Revival case bronze mounts, including a large frieze in open waist depicting Venus and Cupid. Other decoration includes a winged harpy, lion masks, male and female masks, floral scrollwork and more. Turned oak finials with bronze mounts, fluted front column with turned drops below bonnet, scroll-cut bracket base, original finish, ca 1886-1894. Exposed bronze weights and pendulum, silvered brass dial, both Roman and Arabic numerals. Works have been replaced with a modern battery-operated movement. Museum accession number on pendulum "73.1/79"; 85.75" high x 18" wide x 9.75" deep. The original brass movement for this clock is fairly readily available.

L. WATSON CINCINNATI CHERRY TALL CASE CLOCK,
ca 1820, poplar secondary wood with old, probably original, finish. Broken arch pediment with original turned wooden finials, chip-carved rosettes, 4 free-standing columns, and arched top door. Case waist has canted corners with lamb's tongues on top and bottom, chip carving, a scratch-beaded door, and sits upon elaborately shaped skirt. Repainted polychrome and gilt-decorated arched dial is signed L~Watson Cincinnati, and includes red flowers in the spandrels and red-breasted robin in the arch. Original wooden 30-hour movement, lacking bell, movement seat stamped ED (for Ephraim Downs). A very nice Watson. 92" high x 16.5" wide x 9.75" deep.

AMERICAN CHERRY AND PAINT-DECORATED TALL CASE CLOCK,
old poplar and pine secondary wood case, with broken arch pediment and engaged quarter-columns. Hood has freestanding turned columns in front; applied, carved paterae and shell in the tympanum; chip-carved rosettes. Waist has paneled, cockbeaded door with round window and original brass pull. Paneled base sits upon turned and ebonized feet. Though hands and bronze bell are old, dial and brass works are new. Reverse of calendar wheel is signed, "A.H. Clipson / Glendale, Ohio." Case retains old, possibly original, red wash with black on red grain paint decoration to the quarter-columns. Ca 1825-30, possibly Cincinnati. 91" high x 17.5" wide x 10.75" deep. Addison Clipson is a noted Cincinnati architect, designed "The Brewery" at the Drawbridge Inn, in Ft. Mitchell Ky.; also designed the Clock Tower and Headquarters Building for NAWCC, in Columbia, PA. The case for it is likely made by Samuel Best of Cincinnati.

30-hour wood and brass, five-wheeled train movement, patented in 1823, polychrome-painted wood dial, Roman numerals and gilt scrollwork. Mahogany with curly maple plinths, original brass urn finials, wonderfully complete printed paper label. Original tin can pulley caps and tinned iron plate on back, typical of this firm. Tablet has original glass, appears to have expertly repainted, landscape with house. A classic pillar and scroll; 17.5" wide x 5.5" deep x 31" high.

in frame and cornerblock case of curly maple and mahogany, original red stain and glass. Original paper label reads, Franklin Clocks, Made & Sold By E.W. Spinning. 30-hour, weight-driven, wooden works. Painted and gilt wooden dial, Arabic numbers and scrolled spandrels. Repainted tablet. 25.5" high x 15.25" wide x 4.5" deep.
